Brief History
In 1978 a group of local artists
organized the Cedar Keyhole Artists Cooperative as a creative outlet and
Gallery for local artists. Originally located in the building which now
houses Tony's Seafood Restaurant, the Cedar Keyhole Gallery took off.
In
1979 it was moved to its current location in the
2nd Street Historic District
across from newly restored building which is now home of the library. Features of the 19th century building such as the second-story open porch and circular
stairway, were carefully added in keeping with the original
architecture of the building.
The Art & Artists Today
Over the years, the Keyhole has hosted over 50
artists, and several charter members still participate. All items are
handmade and represent a broad range of fine, traditional and contemporary
art and a variety of styles and crafts. A wide-range of methods and
materials are also represented such as leather, fabric, ceramic, pottery,
glass, metal, wood, natural and recycled materials.
Many
of the artists work in more than one medium,
though each has his or her own specialty. Membership is open only to
residents who live in Cedar Key or adjoining counties. Members also share in the day-to-day work involved in
running the business. The Keyhole Membership Committee is in charge of
reviewing new applicants.
